The following is a—by no means complete—list of resources to help you launch or accelerate your artistic career.
We’ve included links to granting agencies, listservs, arts organizations … any resource we’ve come across that could be useful to creative artists.
If you know of additional arts-related resources that are not listed here, please tell us about them! Email information about any resources you’d like to share with the Carolina community to the Arts Institute web editor at haynswor@mailbox.sc.edu.
Artsopportunities.org
A service of the Southern Arts Federation, this database lists all kinds of arts opportunities, from grants to contests to jobs, and allows you to sort by geographic region or see listings from all over the country.
Hub City Writers Project
A non-profit independent press and literary arts association, Spartanburg-based Hub City publishes local writers, provides both a virtual and real community for South Carolina writers, and has become a national model for community-based writers’ programs all over the nation.
National Endowment for the Arts
A federal agency dedicated to excellence in the arts, the NEA is a powerhouse for arts-related grants, and its website is also a great resource for news about national-level developments in the arts community.
New York Foundation for the Arts
A great resource for grants and general arts information, in New York and nationwide. Check out its listings of jobs for artists too.
The South Carolina Arts Commission
A comprehensive one-stop resource for artists in any discipline. Funds a number of grants, contests, and awards, and also provides information about and/or links to a host of other resources for artists in South Carolina.
The South Carolina Humanities Council
The SCHC funds, promotes, and coordinates a wide range of endeavors—from exhibits to films to dramatizations and lectures—that pertain to the humanities, including the arts. A good resource for grants large and small.
The South Carolina Poetry Initiative
A statewide organization that promotes and celebrates the reading, writing, and performing of poetry in South Carolina. Sponsors a number of workshops, retreats, and contests for poets.
South Carolina Writers Workshop
A literary arts organization serving both new and established writers, the SCWW hosts a major writers’ conference every fall in Myrtle Beach, and the SCWW website, with its blogs, chatrooms, and online publication of members’ work, is a great place to connect with other writers. |
