"South Carolina has a strong literary pulse, and at the heart of that pulse is USC. The University's custom of supporting and cultivating the literary experience provides a wealth of opportunities for teachers, students, writers and readers to thrive as one community."

With strong programs in literature and composition and rhetoric, a growing
creative writing program that is rapidly emerging as one of the finest in the
region, and talented students and faculty whose interests and publications cover
a vast range of topics and genres, the University of South Carolina is home to a
vibrant literary arts scene. The program is notable not only for the quality of
the work produced by its faculty and students but also for the breadth of its
literary arts programming and its outreach to the community.
Through innovative programs like "Caught
in the Creative Act" and the Fall Festival of Authors, which bring world-renowned
authors to campus each year; The Poetry
Initiative, which celebrates the reading, writing and performance of poetry
in a range of events both on and off campus; and
Split P Soup,
which helps elementary school students develop a love of creative writing and
reading, creative writers and literary scholars at Carolina both practice and
promote the literary arts in a host of exciting ways.
