With the state's only MFA program in theatre, an acclaimed faculty, talented
students, a series of internationally-renowned guest artists, three fully-equipped
theatres, and ties to three prominent regional theatres, the Theatre Department at
the University of South Carolina offers outstanding training for aspiring thespians
and brings outstanding live theatre to the Columbia community.
An exceptional student-faculty ratio of one to four means theatre students at
Carolina receive a lot of individual attention. Undergraduates in the program
have opportunities not only to act but also to direct, design, stage manage, and
gain hands-on experience in theatre marketing.
The University's three theatres provide distinctive settings for different kinds
of dramatic performances, allowing the Theatre Department to stage everything from
minimalist experimental pieces to full-scale musicals. Known not only for the
quality of the acting itself but also for striking set design and costumes, theatrical
events at the University have long been celebrated by Columbia residents as highlights
of the community's cultural calendar.
