"A lot of people take Columbia for granted, but there's really a strong arts community here, anchored by the University."
Painter and sculptor Mike Williams, BFA, '89
Offering programs of study across a wide range of disciplines, from drawing and
painting to sculpture, ceramics, photography, printmaking, graphic design, media
arts, and art history, the Art Department at the University of South Carolina is
home to a vibrant and innovative visual arts community. Nationally- and
internationally-known faculty work with students in outstanding facilities
both to study and to produce great art.
The Art Department is also a tremendous asset to the Columbia community. Its
galleries provide a showcase for exciting new works by faculty and students and
for major exhibitions of work by renowned artists from around the globe. Its
community outreach programs, like the Young Artists Workshop, nurture artistic
talent and foster arts appreciation throughout the community. And for generations,
its students have gone on to become leading artists and art educators in South
Carolina and beyond.
