School of Medicine Columbia

Career Advising

Our career advising team has one goal and that's to support our students in all of their endeavors from orientation and long past graduation when they have found their dream position in the field they have chosen to pursue.

All six of the School of Medicine Columbia's degree-seeking programs and their students have access to career advising services and resources.

For M.D. Students

Career Advising and Professional Development supports the process building the “KASH” – the knowledge, attitudes, skills, and habits of practice for your career in medicine.  Building the KASH, also known as competency, is a lifelong process.

General advisors and specialty advisors will support each medical student’s journey.  The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia utilizes the educational program objectives to optimize the personal and professional development of medical students as they develop their professional identity as future physicians.

For Graduate Students

For graduate students, our staff works directly with main campus and the career advisor for the graduate school, Nigel Smith, providing workshops, events and advising sessions to help students in all six of our graduate programs achieve their dreams upon departing the School of Medicine Columbia.

Our graduate student liason's in JoSondra Hughes and Takillya Brown are also at the SOMC on the VA campus to provide the in-person and face-to-face guidance and support our graduate students need during and througout their time in Columbia.

Graduate students are also encouraged to access and use the Graduate Student Resources Hub through USC's main campus to find information on how Carolina is providing continued support to graduate students across the university's campus.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
